A Restaurant - A Revisit
Some friends came up to visit from the midwest, and we were looking for a nice place to go to dinner with a cool atomsphere… something specific to the area. We started thinking about Newport Beach and I started thinking about cougars and *lightbulb* - A restaurant. We’ve been here once before, when my parents came up to visit. It’s a really nice place and great for taking guests. The food is...

Beyonce Bowl - Jambalaya Bowl
This gorgeous jambalaya was served to us in theme with Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans this year. Who runs the world? Beyonce. Who fills my belly? Suanne. Thanks for this delicious Louisiana Creole dinner of spicy jambalaya, collard greens, and corn bread! Washed down with a bright, floral, Belgian style PranQster, and I almost forgot the 13.1 miles I struggled to run that morning. This...

Keen-waahhh
Quinoa (not pronounced “kwih-noah,” news to me) is a veritable jack-of-all-grains.  You can use it in a cold summer salad, as a hot breakfast cereal, a creamy side dish with dinner, I think you can even bake with it.  It’s light and fluffy, just a little bit nutty, and it soaks up just about whatever you simmer it in.  I think I’d like to personify those qualities too. ...

An American New Year in China : FRA-home
The food in Lufthansa First Class is so, so impressive.  Everything we had was delicious and perfectly prepared.  I have no idea how they accomplish this at 40,000 feet in the air. We had champagne and macadamia nuts before take-off.   This is a really nice pairing, that I was completely unaware of before Lufthansa.  Traveling really does broaden your horizons! First Offering- Amuse bouche: ...

An American New Year in China : Lufthansa First...
Now this is worth waking up early for. This is worth a trip around the world. This is worth 70,000 United Mileage Plus miles and 70 miles on the treadmill, to be executed at a later date of course. Ahhh, this poached egg! That’s a currant-filled pancake, and proscuitto with melon (that I, myself, artfully displayed). Snacks on every flat surface. Hot, nutty, espresso...

An American New Year in China : MUC-FRA
We left Munich a little soggier than we’d like, but we were able to dry off and warm up in the comfort of the Lufthansa First Class Lounge.  We sat down in the dining room for a little dinner before our short flight to Frankfurt.  We had the option of ordering off a menu, but chose to just peruse the buffet instead. An attendant brought a very stylish tray of assorted breads and...

An American New Year in China : Munich
We landed in Munich after 8pm and took the S-Bahn into the city in some pretty serious rain.  We had no interest in searching for food and getting soaked, so we voted to go to bed early and wake up early for our platinum breakfast buffet at the Le Meridien.  If you’ve been following our travels and our breakfasts, you know that there is nothing better than a Le Meridien breakfast buffet. ...

An American New Year in China : BKK-MUC
Dom Perignon.  I had heard rappers speak of it, but I had never tasted it myself.  Well, upon boarding the 747 to Munich I was promptly offered my first glass.  It’s heavenly. With what I like to call a slight “bourgeois buzz,” we got comfortable and changed into our complimentary, dolphin gray, jersey cotton, Thai Airways pajamas.  We took off and the food just kept coming. ...

Kitchen Disasters: When Blenders Fight Back
I am interrupting my Around the World recap to tell the tale of a dinner gone awry.  Last night’s dinner, to be specific.  It began (as so many tragedies do) with the best of intentions.  I saw this recipe for white bean soup on Pinterest and we had some thick cut bacon leftover from that one amazing breakfast I made that I thought would pair perfectly.  It’s basically just a can of...

An American New Year in China : HKG-BKK
We were leaving too early to partake in the complimentary breakfast buffet at the hotel restaurant again, so they let us order room service breakfast on the house! “Exotic Coconut Jelly” = strange cubes of fruit snack-like coconut We stopped briefly in the Thai Airways lounge at the Hong Kong airport for a coffee, juice, and coconut ice cream. The flight was short, maybe 2 1/2 hours,...

An American New Year in China: Hong Kong, day 2
The Sheraton had a very nice breakfast buffet.  I started with an American/English style plate, then moved on to a more Chinese plate. We visited the Victoria Harbour, saw the Hong Kong Art Museum, Space Museum, and Cultural Centre.  We took the Star Ferry over to Hong Kong Island in search of some dim sum for lunch, but found a lot of really cool, trendy California wine bars instead. Weird. ...

An American New Year in China: Hong Kong, day 1
We stayed at the Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers and were greeted with a bowl of fresh fruit in our room upon arrival. However, we were on a mission for Hong Kong street food and we had no time for fruit. (someone who looked even more lost/hungry than us) We settled on glossy fried noodles with pork and cold beer in scratched plastic cups.  We were not disappointed. We did not...

An American New Year in China: SFO-HKG
We received upgrades to United Business class at the very last minute, and we were so lucky we did - it’s a 14 hour flight!  This insured we’d have reasonably comfortable sleeping arrangements and constant culinary sustenance. First meal:   (I’m very into cheese plates with port after meals now!) Second Meal: Breakfast before landing: (Breakfast was kind of odd,...

An American New Year in China : SNA-SFO
(or, Around the World in 6 Days, 4 Airlines, 2 Sets of Pajamas and Some Free Food) This was the very first thing I consumed in 2013. Carrot, apple, ginger, kale juice at 6:30am while we waited for our shuttle to take us to the airport to begin our adventure.  We though it would be smart to start clean and healthy, because who knows what we’d be eating for the rest of the week.  We flew...
